Many people, as they begin their journey towards a happier, healthier, lifestyle, set goals for themselves, as a way to gauge one’s weight loss success. It is important to set goals, as they give you affirmation that your hard work is paying off and you are seeing the results that you should expect to see. However, the problem is, many people make unrealistic goals that are almost impossible to meet without the use of drastic measures.
Once the goal has been set, it is like it has been set in stone in the mind of the dieter. One must lose that “x” number of pounds by the end of the week that was their weekly goal – no matter what! This can lead people down a very dangerous path as it can prompt them to begin using diet pills, skipping meals, or even taking laxatives to help increase the rate at which they see results. But the sad thing is, even with all these techniques, they often do not work, as this is not the path to true, long-term success in weight loss.
We have to set reasonable goals and expectations for ourselves or we are setting ourselves up for failure, which, in turn, is likely to make us want to give up on our weight loss goals once and for all. This negative attitude causes so many people to fail, when what they really need to do, in order to get the results they want, is to change the way they look at success in weight loss and change the way they set their goals.
To do this, make small, daily goals that allow you to see how you have made positive strides in the right direction at the end of each day. This could be as simple as following through on your goal to park you car as far from work as possible, as well as walking on your lunch break. These small things add up to huge results over time, and being able to see your success in weight loss efforts at the end of each day is often enough to keep our confidence high and see us through the entire journey. Before you know it, by facing smaller, more reasonable goals such as these, you will start to really see the results of your weight loss efforts, and it will help you to stay on path to be a success in weight loss, long-term.
It is important to note that with our busy lives, some days will be easier, and more successful than others. Everyone faces bumps in the road on their journey towards weight loss, but it is vital to our success that we focus on the positive, not the areas where we have failed. Keeping ourselves in a positive frame of mind puts us in the right mindset to be able to stay true to our journey, brush ourselves off and get back on path each time something knocks us down, and celebrate even the most seemingly small of goal successes, is the best way to long-term results, that stick.
